Supplements and Wellness products containing hemp extracts are more popular than ever and while millions of people use them, one question looms: will they show up on a drug test?
The short answer is no – not if the hemp supplements are truly free of the compound THC, but there’s more to it, and knowing about hemp, CBD, THC, and how drug tests work can remove any risk of accidentally testing positive for THC on a drug test. It’s important to understand what’s inside the hemp supplements you use, how CBD differs from THC, and what exactly drug tests are designed to detect.
There are different species of the Cannabis Sativa or hemp plant and different ways of extracting oil from hemp. There are many different compounds found in the oil of the hemp plant called cannabinoids. CBD is one type of cannabinoid, THC is another. Extracting and preparing hemp oil to isolate and concentrate the CBD to produces CBD oil. CBD oil is then added to various products ranging from sublingual drops to skincare products. Hemp oil is identical to CBD oil except that it does not contain CBD.
Other species of Cannabis are cultivated to produce high amounts of a substance called THC. THC is the compound that causes the psychoactive effects associated with cannabis. Products and supplements with high amounts of THC are controlled substances sold in licensed dispensaries and subject to state laws.
CBD and Hemp supplements come from species of the cannabis plant that have very little THC, to begin with, and most are then further purified to remove all traces of THC. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved hemp and CBD products to be sold over the counter as nutritional supplements so long as they contain less than 0.3% THC. So long are you are sure the hemp or CBD product you are buying has little or no THC, there is no chance a drug test designed to detect THC will show positive for the presence of THC.
CBD vs THC
CBD and THC are both naturally occurring botanical compounds found in the cannabis plant. They are both classified as cannabinoids, but they are quite different. CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is not a psychoactive compound like THC, nor is it a milder form of marijuana. Using CBD will not result in a euphoric high and it is not used recreationally, but rather therapeutically. CBD products are used strictly as a wellness supplement, similar to how hemp products are used. CBD oil (so long as it is very low to no THC) is completely legal and can be bought as an over-the-counter supplement at stores and online.
THC stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol. It too is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant and the one for which it is most famous. The marijuana strain of the cannabis plant is purposely cultivated to produce high amounts of THC, far more than the strains of the plant that produce hemp and CBD oil. When a product contains a high amount of cannabinoid THC, it becomes a controlled substance subject to state laws. Products made from the high-THC strains of cannabis are sold in state-regulated dispensaries and monitored by government agencies. Since these products are only sold in specialized dispensaries, you won’t find them sold in retail stores or online, so there is no way to accidentally buy them.
Is CBD legal?
CBD products are not only legal but widely available at online and retail stores. CBD products are classified as nutritional supplements by the FDA and since 2018 and are legal nationwide. As long as they contain below 0.3% THC or no THC, the CBD products you see online or in stores are completely legal to buy and sell. When it comes to the law, they are no different from other over-the-counter wellness products or dietary supplements.
Some cannabis products do contain both THC and CBD, but they are classified differently under the law. Cannabis-based products that contain both CBD and THC are considered controlled substances by government and regulatory agencies. This doesn’t mean they are illegal, but they are subject to laws that vary by state. They still can be bought and sold at licensed dispensaries. The key to understanding the difference is knowing it’s not the CBD that varies in legality, but THC. CBD products, so long as they contain little or no THC, are always legal. Most reputable CBD products will state directly how much THC they contain or if they are THC-free.
What about “full-spectrum” CBD?
You may encounter the term “full-spectrum” when searching or shopping for CBD products. This means the product labeled as Full Spectrum contains all the naturally occurring cannabinoids and other ingredients found in the cannabis plant. Full-spectrum CBD products have not been specifically purified to isolate the CBD and remove trace amounts of THC. Full-spectrum CBD products may have a THC content higher than the 0.3% minimum allowed by the FDA, and it’s possible this small amount may be detected in a drug test that tests for the presence of THC.
If you want to ensure there is no chance of getting any residual or trace THC in a CBD product, do not purchase full-spectrum products. Rather, choose products that use “pure” CBD oil, list the THC content or state they are completely THC-free.
Will hemp or CBD use show up on a drug test?
No – so long as the products have very little or no THC. Drug tests are designed to detect the presence of the THC compound, and hemp and CBD supplements contain almost no THC or none at all. As long as you are sure the CBD oil products you are using are not full spectrum, they will not show up on a drug test that tests for the presence of THC. There is no chance CBD falsely showing up as THC on a drug test designed to detect THC.
To be sure, look for CBD products labeled as containing “pure” CBD oil. There is 0% THC contained in Pure CBD oil supplements.
